Dan Payne has extensive experience in comedy, drama, prosthetics and stunts in an ongoing and growing career appearing in over 140 films and episodes of television over the past 20 years. He has a unique perspective that he can share with you to enhance your own skills and abilities in the industry. Dan will be able to help your shape your process and learn to ‘play your instrument’ to your full potential. Having been a reader for many casting directors Dan can offer behind the scenes info you need know. Dan Payne has worked with actors such as Kate Beckinsale (Underworld Awakening), Joan Cusack, Chris Hemsworth (Cabin in The Woods). Dan has performed for directors such as Duncan Jones (Warcraft), Joss Whedon (Cabin in The Woods) and Zack Snyder (Watchmen). Dan’s on-screen credits include numerous guest stars on high profile television series as well as lead roles in a comedy series, Alice I Think. Dan lead the critically acclaimed and award- winning feature Mulligans, and has also been a lead in numerous MOW’s (Hallmark, Lifetime and Independant) and continues to grow his presence on episodic television shows.

In Dan’s ‘On Your Mark’ class you will cover every aspect of auditioning. We will cover audition/acting basics to tips that only industry experience can provide. Learn to deal with the technical aspects of marks, eye lines, movement, props/no props. Learn the process aspects to break down scenes in terms of arc, objective, stakes, character, moments, moment before, pace, relationships, environment, and ‘in your own words’. Learn how the process can affect you — the practicalities — delays, other actors, your own worst enemy. Understand your space and have the confidence to own it. Learn to control what you can and let the rest go! When applicable, students can bring in actual auditions to work. This class is meant to help you shape your process, build your confidence and learn your instrument.

Prerequisites:  We have actors just starting out to full union members in this class.

Dan Payne

Dan Payne was born in Victoria, BC, Canada and subsequently lived a nomadic lifestyle as his family moved a great deal.  Dan has appeared on the big screen in feature films such as Everything, Everything (Stella Meghie), No Clue (Carl Bessai), John Tucker Must Die (Betty Thomas),Watchmen (Zach Schneider) , World of Warcraft (Duncan Jones), Star Trek Beyond (Justin Lin) as well as the critically acclaimed indie film “Mulligans.”  

Payne’s career to date also compromises of many television features such as: A Time to Dance, Devil in the Dark, Strenger in the House, Dying to be Loved,  All Yours, The Hunters, Christmas Miracle, Aliens Ate My Homework, Buried Secrets, A Family Thanksgiving, The Secret Lives of Second Wives, Truth, Hiding and many more including the incredibly popular Disney’s Descendants (1,2, and 3).  Payne is no stranger to the horror/sci-fi genre with roles in Cabin in the Woods (Drew Goddard), Underworld: Awakening  horror (Mans Marlind/Bjorn Stein) as well as the series film R.L. Stine’s: Haunting Hour, Blood:A Butcher’s Tale and the dark and intriguing web series, Divine: the series (Ivan Hayden).

At 6’4 and 225 pounds Payne was a natural to become an athlete but he also had a thirst for higher education. Upon graduating from high school, he had earned several university scholarships and chose the University of Calgary for his post-secondary education. There he played volleyball for the U of C Dinosaurs, traveling throughout Canada. His successful volleyball career, which included coaching volleyball camps for special needs children eventually ended in Holland.

A subsequent move  to Australia for four years to join his brother Josh led to a stint as a professional photographer and a renewed love of the arts. He started in stand-up comedy, performing in shows that were co-written and co-directed by him and his brother. Eventually moving to London, England, Dan continued to study acting as well as to perform on stage and in film in London England, eventually returning to Canada once he had honed his craft and his confidence.

Payne’s motion picture career has blossomed  since moving back to Canada. He has become a familiar face on television and was seen in a lead role on the CTV sitcom Alice I Think . He also had guest starring roles on such successful series as The Flash, Mech X-4, Once Upon A Time, iZombie, Legends of Tomorrow, Good Witch, Supernatural, Arctic Air, Tower Prep, Fairly Legal, Battlestar Galactica,Dead Like Me, Whistler, The L Word, Saved, Just Cause , Stargate SG1, Stargate: Atlantis, Smallville, The Chris Isaac Show, Robson Arms and many moreincluding two Muppet movies: A Very Muppet Christmas and The Muppets Wizard of Oz.

Dan continues his efforts to constantly expand on his experiences in both comedy and drama, which only strengthens his life long passion for acting.   His career has enjoyed growing success, and the future looks promising for Dan with his leading-man good looks and sense of humor.

Cancellation policy:

  • You can make up any class. Just let us know when you are going to be away.
